Activity Check Guidelines:

UPDATE 09/26/2020

Due to low numbers, for now until a point where we have enough characters/players AC will be check in only effective September. To app a new character you will still need to pass with half AC.

----

Activity Check happens once a month, and is either:

ONE forum post/open log + 1-2 threads adding up to 5 comments

OR

10 comments across 2-5 threads

Here are a few additional AC rules:
• You may use at most 1 inbox thread for AC.
• You may use at most of 1 thread with castmates for AC.
• You may use at most one thread with the same character for AC. So if you submit 3 threads each thread should be with a different character.

New characters do not need to submit AC, they only have to check in!

Activity Check Submissions:

AC will be submitted through a google form. The form is open all month except while AC is being processed when it will be closed, which will be from the 1st to the 3rd of every month. AC will open at 9 PM EST on the 3rd of each month, and will be posted alongside the monthly mod post. The form closes when AC closes (last day of the month at 9 PM EST), so pay attention to the time and get it in early!

Threads must be within the AC period; they cannot be from the previous month, and the comments must be from before AC ends for the month (9 PM EST on the last day of the month). Back dated threads are fine to use.

The required parts of the form are marked in red. The form won’t allow you to submit until you’ve filled in all of the fields. Any questions not marked in red can be left blank.

Capitalization, etc isn’t important, just make sure the important information is there and understandable.

The section for threads should be filled in like this. If you are using a post and a single thread, you can simply put N/A for the third thread section.

The final section of the form is for if you were on hiatus. Please check which option applies to you. If you choose to submit half AC or to use your two week hiatus to pass AC, please remember to link your comment on the hiatus post. If you were on hiatus but submit full AC anyway it counts as a regular pass.

If you pass entirely by AC one month in the next month you must pass AC barring extenuating circumstances. If you passed via half AC, you cannot pass by full AC next month. Naturally, we understand that life can get busy sometimes so if extenuating circumstances come up please contact the mods before AC closes! As early as possible will be best.

And that’s it! Once you hit submit, the form will be sent in for processing. If you made a mistake, don’t worry. Google forms allow you to edit your submission after the fact and will give you a link to be able to do so. If you realize you made a mistake a week later and don’t have that link, it’s still okay! You can submit the form again.

As a note, please be aware that you must submit one form per character. If you’re playing more than one character you will need to submit it more than once.

Checking AC:

Please make certain that the AC you submit is sound. Two days before AC closes we will post a warning list for people who submitted AC that needs to be corrected. As AC will be open all month long no warning will be given to those who have not posted at all.

Please try to get your AC in early so that you don’t have to worry! AC will always be due on the last day of the month, at 9 PM EST.

After you submit your AC form, your submission will appear here. This spreadsheet will be checked periodically by the AC mod and the status of your AC will be marked on the spreadsheet. If under Pass/Fail it says PASS then congratulations! Your AC is done! If it says FAIL it means you need to take another look. If it says nothing then it hasn't been processed yet.

If your AC submission has failed (such as due to miscounted comments), you can hover over the cell with "FAIL" in it, to see the reason why.

You can sort the spreadsheet as you please by clicking the drop-down arrow in the title of any column, and then sort the list as you please.

If you submit your AC on the last day of the month, in the interest of fairness, all AC forms submitted on the last day of the month will have 24 hours from when the mods check your AC to submit any necessary revisions. So please double check your AC after you have submitted it because the warning list will only be for the people who had submitted prior to it going up. The form will be closed at this time, so please submit AC revisions after that point via PM. After that, it will be treated as having missed AC.

Failure to pass AC once results in a strike. If you do not pass the second month you will be swept from the game. Due to the nature of drops, if you idle out from the game you will not have the choice of whether your character dies in the labyrinth or just ends up lost and we will decide using RNG. If your character is swept from the game, you have 24 hours after AC results are posted to let us know your preference.

Thank you for reading this guide, and if you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us or ask on the FAQ.

F.A.Q.:

GeneralMechanicsApplicationExtended

General
What is Etrian Odyssey?
Etrian Odyssey is a series of RPG games made by Atlas with an emphasis on exploration and party customization and creation.

Do I need to know the games to play in Labyrinthian?
No. While the game borrows NPCs and some setting basics from the game it’s largely so we have a database of monsters, dungeons designs and NPCs to use rather than having to come up with them from scratch. This way we can focus more on creating events and integrating player ideas instead!

How does posting work?
Action logs should be posted to the log community ([community profile] labyrinthian_logs), with a header and all relevant information. These are face to face interactions.

Network posts should be posted to network community ([community profile] labyrinthian_rp). The network functions like a video game forum with a text function but no video or voice. Any character can pull this up by opening their menu, something they learn to do via a tutorial that starts after they escape from Gladsheim after arriving. Characters can private message individuals or groups. Please note that this function is limited when a character is in the labyrinth and they cannot send or receive messages from anyone outside of their guild.

Each character is encouraged to make their own IC inbox in their journals.

How does time work?
The OOC to 1 IC day ratio will be 1:1.

How do languages work?
Everyone can suddenly speak a common language that none of them had known before.

How does the Activity Check work?
Activity Check happens once a month, and is either:
ONE forum post/open log + 1-2 threads adding up to 5 comments

OR

10 comments across 2-5 threads

If I want to plot, who should I talk to?
For plots that would affect the game as a whole, please bring it up with a mod. Any small plots can be plotted between you and the player or players in question. Feel free to use the OOC community for all your plotting needs as well.

Places
There are three main places in the game:

Etria, the town set up near the mysterious labyrinth where adventurers can go to rest, buy equipment and just do things away from the dangers of the labyrinth. The town isn’t small by any means but for some reason, none of the buildings seem to be real. Apart from the NPC businesses and guild buildings, all doors and windows not only do not open they seem to lack depth or shape, looking more like they’re painted onto the side of buildings….weird.

For more information on the stores that can be found in Etra please check the Etria Businesses and NPCs page!

The Yggdrasil Labyrinth is where adventurers will be doing all of their exploring. It's separated into 6 stratums (5 floors per stratum), and you are only considered a full-fledged adventurer once you've explored the first floor. Don't let the beauty of the place distract you, because one wrong move could mean death! No one can tell you where it came from or why it’s there.

For more information about each stratum please check the Yggdrasil Labyrinth Page.

Gladsheim is an ancient ruin with some very odd artifacts...This is where you appear when you are first brought into the world of Etria. For more about Gladsheim please check the Arrival Information and Gladsheim page!

Combat

How does fighting work?
Characters fight monsters to gain EXP, with EXP they gain levels, with new levels they unlock new skills which lets them more efficiently fight monsters to gain exp.

Do I have to keep track of my EXP/Levels?
We're going to work on an honour system and say, no, you don't have to. But just bear in mind the IC level cap. If the current level cap is 10 your character is not going to be level 100. Level caps will be listed in the monthly mod post which will be pinned in the OOC comm.

Does my character have HP?

Yes they do and they will have an HP bar over their heads as well as TP bar.

TP?
Using skills cost TP. Note there are some skills that recover HP but the only way to recover TP is staying at an inn or guild building, or going to Ceft's Apothecary to pay for treatment.

Cool. So does my character die if they run out of HP?
Yes.

Can my character feel pain when they're hit? Do they get wounded?

They will definitely feel pain and there are wounds, but dismemberment isn't possible. Incidentally, healing items or spells will close up the wounds as well as recover HP.

Are fights turn based?
No. This is an action RPG.

What can my character fight?
There are generally three types of enemies encountered in the Labyrinths.

Regular Monsters
You just run into these things randomly. Each stratum has a theme and all the monsters there will fit that theme and you can make up what monsters are there. However, each month there will be mentions of ‘Notable Monsters’ which are monsters with specific features. These will be posted in the monthly mod post along with quests and will be pinned in the OOC comm for the month, as well as in the Labyrinth Information page. They will drop things like feathers, claws, bug eyes, scales, etc. that can be sold for Etria's currency which is En.

FOE
They're not exactly bosses, but rather are free-roaming enemies who attack anyone they see on sight. These are powerful and difficult to defeat and whenever they show up there are limited numbers. We will not limit those who want to fight these however, if you want your character to defeat them, please contact a mod and we’ll give you the win conditions specific to the FOE you want to fight! That being said, in true RPG fashion no monster is above the tried and true strategy of ‘grinding until my level is higher’. However, as the level cap has to be raised by new floors being unlocked, this will not be possible right away.

Boss
Powerful enemies that appear on the last level before adventurers can move on to the next stratum! Defeating these will be part of events and designed in such a way that as many characters as possible can participate.

For more information of the current monsters available per level, please check Labyrinth Information

Job Classes

Classes
Upon arrival, characters are given one of fifteen classes. OOCly, you get to pick the class you want for your character. Classes affect a character’s stats as well as what abilities are available to them. Class Change Vouchers will become available later on. A rare item known as a Special Class Change Voucher might become available that lets characters regain canon abilities.

What classes are there?
There are four types of classes: Melee, Ranged, Mage and Custom. Melee are classes that focus on close combat, Ranged Classes use weapons like firearms or bows, Mage Classes use magic, each with their own unique abilities. You can find a more detailed list on the the Class Directory.

And Custom Classes?
Custom classes are applied for and created by players based on canon abilities. Characters can only change to a Custom Class using a Custom Class Change Voucher.

Wait, we can change classes?
Characters can change classes if they have the item Class Change Voucher or Custom Class Change Coucher which are occasionally handed out as quest rewards. More on Class Changes here

How will the job classes affect my character?
Characters take on the strengths and weaknesses of the class you choose, so this could mean that a weedy-looking character assigned to Melee Class would then be much sturdier than they seem. Of course, if your character is already trained in the use of weapons, their regular attacks will be stronger than another character that has not if both are at the same level. However, higher level characters, regardless of training will still do more damage to monsters if the hit connects.

Skills are innate to the classes and your character will gain the knowledge of how to use them once they are unlocked.

So if my character isn't a fighter they can still fight monsters in this game?
Yes. As long as your character's attack land they will do damage and the higher their level is the more damage they can do.

"As long as the attack lands" you say...

For projectile classes or certain magic classes you may need to aim, yes. Though there are also luck boosting items. Time to make those crazy shots that bounce off a whole bunch of things before hitting your target.

For more information on classes please check the Class Directory!

Guilds

What are guilds?
Guilds are your home away from home, and your family while you are away from your family (assuming you have a family, of course). The guilds will house you and feed you for a small fraction of your pay or reward.

Do I have to be in a guild?

Not being a part of a guild will not hurt your character’s chance to interact with game events! However, being a part of a guild gives you certain benefits such as a guild building for your use and extra functions such as being able to pull up a list of your guild members and see at a glance if they are: in town, in the labyrinth, fighting a monster, at full health, in need of help or dead.

You can also send an SOS to your guild members! Guild SOS messages are the only messages that can be sent from inside the Labyrinth to town. Guild members can also send private messages to each other while inside the Labyrinth though only if both are inside the labyrinth.

If I am part of a guild do I need to do everything with them?

No. Your character can work with their guild, work with another guild or work independently.

Quests and Missions
What are quests?
Quests are made available in the Bar at the beginning of every month. Quests can be accepted by any characters though occasionally they may require you to bring along party members of specific classes to complete them.

Do I have to do quests?
No. Think of these as side-quests in your standard RPG, perfectly optional.

Why do them then?
Like true side quests, there are rewards for completing them! And sometimes consequences for failing them. Sometimes, results of quests may affect future game events.

What are missions then?
Missions are assigned to characters supposedly by the Expedition HQ. Unlike quests which only appear on the character’s menu after accepting them at the BAR they automatically appear in the character’s menus. Missions will generally be event related or related to new characters coming in during an app cycle.

Does that mean missions are mandatory?
No. Though all characters receive the same missions there is no penalty for not completing them. However, when missions are also game wide events it may still affect your character in some way or another if they are interacting with the setting.

Are there rewards for completing missions?
Yes. Unlike quest rewards, however, rewards for completing missions have more of an impact on the overall setting.

Canon Updates, Death and Drops

Can I canon update my character?
Yes, but you'll have to do a writeup as to what has changed and notify us in advance. This applies to both canon updates as well as to class changes.
Once approved, characters will disappear in the Labyrinth only to return after at least 2 IC days. Their status to their guildmates will read ERROR PLAYER NOT FOUND.
On the day of their return, this status turns into REDEFINING PLAYER...RECOMPILING PLAYER...EXECUTING…

And then their status returns to normal! And they are officially back in the game!

Upon returning, characters remember both new canon events as well as wandering lost in the labyrinth, as if both happened simultaneously. Though during their wandering of the labyrinth it’s as if it’s completely devoid of all monsters, enemies or other characters.

What happens when characters die?
When characters die in the Labyrinth their body disappears and their status to their guildmates will appear as DECEASED. Two to three days later, a CR of the player’s choice will suddenly receive a quest to retrieve their friend’s last effects. This can be a personal item special to the character that will be found near where they met their death. Upon being picked up, it will end up in the character’s inventory as a Key Item and be prompted to bring it to the healing hall. When they bring it to the healing hall NAME OF HEALER will take the item and promise to do what they can. The next day, your character will be alive again! For some reason though, they don’t remember anything past the last time they had been in Etria before dying...but they will have nightmares for a few days. What were they about? They can’t really remember but there are some vague details that make it seem like they’re remembering the moment they died.

How clear are these dreams?
The dreams will be vague becoming more vague the longer they returned until they don’t have them at all about a week after. How much your character can glean from these dreams is up to you but no matter what they won’t remember what they went through in its entirety and even if the dreams are clear they seem almost like they happened to someone else.

Can death be forced on a character?
Death will never be forced on a character without player consent in game, so there's no need to worry about that. While some achievements may have a requirement related to character death those will never be a part of events. In other words, your character only needs to die in game if you so choose.

What happens to dropped characters then??
That depends on what the player wants, it will trigger the quest to collect their last effects as if they had died or they will disappear into the Labyrinth as if on a canon update. In the former case, upon bringing these to Ceft Apothecary characters will be told revival isn’t possible. Due to this mechanic, characters that are idle out will have 24 hours to let us know which outcome they want before we RNG it.

Wait then can I reapp my character?
Yes. If re-apped, their personal item will disappear from the game and afterwards they will arrive in Gladsheim with all new characters with all their memories of the game intact if you wish as well as nightmares about dying in the Labyrinth. The only difference is, when they are presented with the floating panel this time they can select LOAD GAME.

What if I take them from a later canon point when I reapp?
They’ll remember the new events as if they had gone back.

Can I app a character that was previously dropped?

You can. However your character will arrive with no previous memories of being in the game and when presented with the menu this time they could only select New Game.

Characters and Applications
Can I play a character from Etrian Odyssey?
Of course! You are more than welcome to play a character from the EO franchise, but please keep in mind that they must be apped just like a regular character.

What sort of character can be apped here?
Canon and original characters.

Are CRAU and AUs allowed?

CRAUs are allowed. Just note in the history part of your app what happened in their previous experiences. AUs will be judged on a case-by-case basis but if the AU is canon it will be allowed.

What if the character I want to app is an AU of another character already in game?
Again, this will be judged on a case-by-case basis but the rule of thumb we'll be going by is 'are the two characters distinct from each other? To clarify, this isn't about if canon events are different but how different the characters themselves are. When in doubt, just ask.

How many characters can I app?
The maximum number of characters you can play in Labyrinthian is THREE. You can app only ONE character per cycle.

What happened to my abilities?
They were lost at some point between your being stolen from your world and being brought to Etria and replaced by abilities of the RPG class you were assigned.

What happened to my weapons and belongings?
They are in your character’s inventory. Though they can’t access it until they leave Gladsheim after they arrive after which they will suddenly receive a tutorial on how to access their inventory.

What can my character bring with them?
They can bring any items that can be classified as a WEAPON, ARMOUR (Heavy, Light or Clothes) or ACCESSORY. You will need to indicate which these fall under during your app. And you are limited to six items.

How do I decide how to categorize my items?
Any item that is used to attack will be a WEAPON
Any item that can be worn like clothing on the body will be ARMOUR. Either HEAVY ARMOUR, LIGHT ARMOUR or CLOTHES ARMOUR
Any other item that can be worn on the hand, feet, or head will be an ACCESSORY

Why do I need to categorize my items?
Each class has specific items they can equip. Accessories are common between all classes but armour and weapons or not.

Wait, does this mean if my character brings a certain weapon/armour and it doesn’t fit the class I append them in as they can’t wear it?
Yes, that’s exactly what it means.

Does what my character equip affect their appearance?
Yes. Though the same piece of equipment may look different on different classes. It’s largely up to you how different they are, however.

I'd like to app someone from an on going canon
Yes, this is allowed if there is enough canon, but we require there to be a three month period before new characters or canon points become appable.

Is it possible to apply for a character that and not choose any of the classes?
No, you must pick a class when apping initially.

Can I choose a custom class to start?

No. Custom classes must be applied for with a Custom Class Change Voucher.

If my character is taken post-death, will they still have whatever they died from?
This is up to you! But assume they will be healed enough that they’re not immediately dying at least.

Can a character be taken post-canon?
Yes.

My character has a pet/mascot creature. Can he/she bring it along?
We may evaluate this on a case by case basis. But the general rule of thumb will be: if the mascot/pet could be considered its own appable character then the answer is probably going to be no.

One condition of having a mascot/pet is that they cannot enter the Labyrinth unless the character has the Rover Class or a custom class that can use them in battle.

My character is missing organs, or have debilitating illnesses. Will these be cured?
If you want them to be. If not it can be played as it is in canon or it can manifest in new ways, for example, a character suffering from poison can lose 1 HP every ten minutes or they spend twice the TP as others to use skills. For health effects, for some reason they are weaker or non-existent while in Etria.

Can my character have more than one class?
Each character can only have one class, and they will not be able to learn skills from other classes. When they change classes they will lose any class specific special skills.
